John Erdman is an Emeritus Professor with appointments in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, the Division of Nutritional Sciences and the Beckman Institute. He is Deputy Director of IHSI. He earned his professional degrees from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Dr. Erdman is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and a Fellow of the American Heart Association, the American Institute for Nutrition and the Institute of Food Technology.
He studies how dietary changes, such as the consumption of tomato products, reduces the risk of prostate cancer using preclinical animal models. In addition, his research laboratory evaluates the impact of lutein and vitamin E on brain and eye development in experimental animals and the use of quantitative ultrasound measurements to quantify fat content in humans with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. His work has funded by NIH, USDA and the Center for Nutrition, Learning and Memory.
