Kayla LambertCommunity-Academic Scholar: Kayla Lambert (she/her)

Project: Kayla worked with Prof. Ruby Mendenhall and Girls Like Me to create a published picture book and community exhibit about Black girls’, mothers’, and other mothers’ mental health (coping mechanisms) and celebrate the beauty and daily lives of Black women and girls. Learn more about the project.

Mentor reflection: Prof. Mendenhall was impressed with Kayla's intellectual curiosity. "Kayla was very interested to learn about qualitative data analysis and presenting the findings. When she presented, she was glowing," said Mendenhall. "After working with Kayla on our project this summer, I hop she is always able to engage in research and academic pursuits that are at the center of her passion."

Do you have a personal story or path that led to your interest in this research project?
My interest in the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health of Black women and girls led to me choosing this project as one of my rankings. I also knew who Dr. Mendenhall was prior to applying so I saw that as a sign that I needed to choose this project. As an African American Studies major I felt that I had the necessary research, historical, and critical thinking skills to be an asset to her project.

How has participating in this program helped you toward your goals?
This program has helped me solidify my decision to incorporate research into my career as a physician. I enjoy all parts of conducting research beginning at submitting an abstract for funding all the way until the paper is published in a journal.

What was the most meaningful part of this experience?
The most meaningful part of my experience has been connecting with my mentor and the research team. From the beginning everyone has treated me nicely and given me opportunities to speak up and voice my opinions without feeling intimidated.

What advice do you have for future scholars or to those who are interested in applying for the program?
All of the project mentors who are selected are doing amazing things. I would tell future scholars to do research on each professor that is listed and see what they do as faculty and the things they're interested in. You may find that other faculty that you weren't chosen for have other opportunities that you can pursue afterwards.
