The Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Initiative (IHSI), the uniting force for research at the intersection of health sciences and technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Carle, the community’s nationally-recognized healthcare system, have joined forces to create the Health Innovations Lecture Series.
The idea for the Health Innovations Lecture Series grew from the deep connections between Illinois and Carle and the desire to further strengthen and complement the ground-breaking clinical and translational research endeavors happening across the institutions.
“The Health Innovations Lecture Series will bring timely topics and renowned speakers to the campus and our community,” said Cohen, a driving force behind the creation of the series. “We are lining up talks and workshops in a variety of areas including clinical and translational neuroscience, genomics, cancer, precision medicine, health equity, and many others. Our collaboration with Carle is critically important because it bolsters the research interests and strengths of both institutions. Ultimately, that will help us foster breakthroughs that change the face of science and the conduct of medicine.”
The series is designed for faculty, researchers, physicians, nurses, and other professionals working in health-related fields. For select lectures, health professionals may have the option to receive continuing medical education credits (CMEs) and a certificate of completion. Members of the public are welcome to attend lectures that are of broad interest.
Robert Healy, MD, has been Carle’s leading physician behind the development of the Health Innovations Lecture Series.
“Understanding groundbreaking studies creates a better appreciation of potential advances which is an important part of continuing education for health professionals.” Healy said. “We believe exchanging information and ideas will open the door to more collaboration between physicians and scientists.”
The first talk in the series will be held Tuesday, February 9 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 1005 of the Beckman Institute. It is entitled “Emerging Health Research Opportunities at Illinois and Carle.” Speakers from Illinois include Neal Cohen, director of IHSI, and Normand Paquin, the Illinois project manager for creation of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Carle speakers are Matthew Gibb, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer, and Jennifer Eardley, vice president for research.
This inaugural talk will provide an update on the progress and vision for the new Carle Illinois College of Medicine; will unveil details of an exciting new seed funding opportunity for clinical and translational research from Carle and IHSI; and will give researchers more information about how they can take advantage of the modern, high-tech laboratory space in the Biomedical Research Center, a jointly operated laboratory space located within the Mills Breast Cancer Institute at Carle.
Future events include: a panel on Rural Health (March 4), a Clinical and Translational Neuroscience Workshop (April 9), a talk from Mayo Clinic physician Heidi Nelson (May), a full-day conference providing updates in the field of neuroscience and associated medical specialties (June 3), and a Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology workshop called Genomics for Clinicians (July).
