External Modules
External modules (EMs) are additional packages of software that can be added to extend REDCap’s base functionality for specific research needs. External modules are developed by REDCap administrators at partner institutions, then vetted by Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) before being made available to the REDCap consortium.
Accessing external modules
The Illinois REDCap team supports a small collection of external modules that most commonly align with the needs of our users. These include the following modules:
- Cross-Project Piping – connects two or more projects to pipe information across projects during data entry
- Extended Reports – expands base report functionality, including reshaping longitudinal data to wide (vs. long) format and adding alternative column labels
- Field Shuffle – shuffles questions into a random order
- Flight Tracker – tracks scholarly publications, grants, and patents over time; this module requires an additional project build agreement with the REDCap team
- HIDESUBMIT Action Tags – allows Submit, Save, and Next buttons to be conditionally hidden
- Image Map – replaces a text, radio, or checkbox field with an interactive image
- Rename File Upload – renames uploaded files to a specified format
- Survey Shuffle – shuffles surveys into a random order

Rates
Invoices are mailed to one or more contacts specified by the client. Invoices only reflect hours worked by the REDCap team. Time spent by the REDCap team to correct errors in the deliverable(s) will not be billable to the client.
A flat fee will be charged for each external module tested, regardless of whether the project team moves forward with using the module for active data collection. This fee covers onboarding the project team to the test environment and testing the external module.
- $30 per external module already supported by the Illinois REDCap team
- $120 per external module not currently supported by the Illinois REDCap team
If the project team moves forward with the external module, an annual fee of $300 per external module will be charged.
External modules that have complex and/or powerful functionality requiring execution by a REDCap administrator may incur additional fees. These will be charged as hourly work under a project build agreement.
