The Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI) recently hosted the 2022 Department of Defense (DoD) Grant Seeking Workshop, which aims to help health sciences researchers identify new funding opportunities and better understand the unique requirements and considerations for submitting a strong DoD proposal. The series attracted researchers from more than 30 departments and 11 colleges and schools across the Illinois campus. Select session recordings are now available on the IHSI website.
“This is an important area of research with many opportunities to use our campus strengths in health science and technology and innovation. IHSI is here to help identify teams and opportunities to help you prepare and pursue these types of grants,” noted IHSI Interim Director Stephen Boppart. “Attending these workshops, hearing from experts, and asking questions is a great start, and the Research Development team is here to help you further your ideas in these collaborations.”
The first two sessions of the workshop included a comprehensive introduction to the DoD, details about the application and review process, and a panel of experienced DoD faculty and consumer reviewers. The third session featured considerations for engaging military-connected communities in health research from Michael Lotspeich-Yadao, Assistant Director of Research and Educational Programs at the Chez Veterans Center, and a keynote address by Colonel Sarah B. Goldman, Director of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
Colonel Goldman discussed the history of CDMRP, key CDMRP hallmarks, and core R&D priorities, and gave an overview of the FY22 programs and their corresponding appropriations. CDMRP administers a two-tier review process consisting of peer and programmatic review, and both panels include consumer reviewers. “The two-tier review process is a partnership. We obviously want the best science, but it also has to fulfill the programmatic goals for each program,” said Colonel Goldman. “Consumers are the heart and soul of CDMRP – they’re certainly the reason why we exist.”
