Congratulations to Leanne Knobloch, a professor of communication at the University of Illinois, for having her paper, "A prospective study of marital distress and mental health symptoms across the deployment cycle” accepted for a prestigious oral presentation at the 2023 Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) taking place August 14-17.
Prof. Knobloch studies how military families communicate across the deployment cycle. Much of her research focuses on mental health, marital dynamics, and reintegration difficulty after deployment. Prof. Knobloch has received a travel support award from the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI) to attend the MHSRS, where she will present research evaluating mental health data from the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Service Members (Army STARRS).
The MHSRS is the Department of Defense (DOD)’s premier medical research meeting and offers an opportunity to engage with program managers and DOD officials, who are often hard to reach, on military biomedical and health-related research topics.
A follow-up to the Department of Defense Grant Seeking Workshop, the MHSRS travel support award is one way IHSI’s research development team supports opportunities for University of Illinois health sciences researchers to connect with important stakeholders such as those affiliated with the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP).
“Developing relationships with program managers is critical to success when applying for funding from military health research programs,” said IHSI’s Research Development Manager for Faculty Development Maggie Berg, who worked with IHSI leadership and business teams to offer travel support funds up to $1,000 for up to three Illinois researchers attending the MHSRS.
Prof. Knobloch is excited to develop connections that may enhance her research program. “MHSRS is a premiere conference for the study of psychological health and resilience among military families,” she explains. “I am excited to have the opportunity to network with well-connected scholars to identify areas of collaboration.”
